New Model Chevrolet Beat India Launch Soon; Will Come as Hatchback, Crossover and Compact Sedan [Video, Pics & Details]

American car giant General Motors has revealed the production-spec 2017 MY Beat for India. The Chevrolet Beat Activ concept was seen at the Auto Expo. Confirming the rumours Chevrolet has now said that the Beat-replacement is a heavily revised version of the current car. Since the next-generation Spark is proving to be too expensive for India’s price-sensitive market. Underpinning the new Beat is a new flexible platform. It will spawn multiple models. These include the Essentia notchback and the Beat Activ Crossover. The new model Chevrolet Beat 2017 should launch by early-2017.

New Model Chevrolet Beat Launch in India

A late 2016 or an early 2017 launch for the new model Chevrolet Beat is on the cards. Last year, at a press conference held in New Delhi, GM announced its future plans for India. The Spin MPV and the new Beat were earlier headed to India. However, based on customer feedback, plans to launch the Spin MPV in India have been shelved. Instead, they will focus on launching cars in popular segments such as SUVs, crossovers and compact sedans.

The other derivative of the new Beat will be the Essentia compact sedan pictured below. It will, in all probability, sit below the current crop of compact sedans on sale in India. You can read more about it here.

Chevrolet Beat Launch Walk-around Video Review

New Model Chevrolet Beat Specifications

Powering the International Beat is a 1.4-litre petrol engine. This engine is good for 98 bhp and mated to a five-speed manual transmission. Also available in the international markets would be an optional CVT. For the Indian market, the current 1.2-litre unit will continue to power the car. The current 1.0-litre Diesel too will be carried over. This will help GM keep costs in check. The Beat replacement will also share a lot of its mechanical and interior bits with the latest gen Chevrolet Spark.

A new radiator grille is the talking point of the new car’s front fascia. This grille reminds us of the new Cruze. It is flanked by wrap-around headlamps. It is based on the existing Beat. This is evident from its side profile. The new-gen Beat, much like the current model, gets door handles in the C-pillars. The rear-end, much like the side, is identical to the current model. The Beat Activ (pictured below), gets additional crossover features. These include body cladding, faux skid plates and reprofiled front bumper along with a different alloy wheel design.

Chevrolet goes on to say that the new generation Chevrolet Beat boasts a “more sophisticated aesthetic that reflects the changing tastes of the global minicar market.”

The next-gen Chevrolet Beat made its public debut last year. The new-gen Beat shares its platform with the new Open Karl/ Vauxhall Viva. The India/Brazil-spec model will borrow the current model’s platform. This platform suits the needs of developing car markets like that of ours. The 2016 Chevrolet Beat (Spark) will not go on sale in India. The new India-spec Beat is based on current model. It will launch next year. The new India-spec Beat borrows design cues from the car showcased at the Auto Expo.

Renault Kwid 1.0 Launch Just Days Away!

Land Rover Experience, New Delhi – Mud-plugging Unplugged!

Since 1948 Land Rover has been in the business of churning out some of the most capable off-roaders in the world. The British Marquee, now owned by Tata Motors, is credited with some legendary names such as the Range Rover and Defender. But when most people talk about modern Land Rovers, they talk about the styling of the Evoque or the luxurious nature of the Range Rover. While this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, people could’ve been forgetting what Land Rovers are really about. Thankfully, however, JLR has been organizing something it calls ‘Land Rover Experience’ across multiple cities. This evemt serves as a gentle reminder of the off-road credentials of Land Rover products. We got behind the wheel of a Discovery Sport at the Delhi leg of the Land Rover Experience to give ourselves a refresher on what these SUVs are capable of.

Land Rover Experience Delhi land-rover-experience-new-delhi (3)

The whole point of the Land Rover Experience is to give customers and media persons a chance to sample off road capabilities Land Rover SUVs. It also gives a chance to learn how the plethora of electronics on board these mud pluggers ensure even the most challenging of terrains don’t bog you down. For this exercise, Land Rover, with the help of Cougar Motorsports, charted out a trail around Damdama lake that was full of natural obstacles. A short briefing and a cuppa later, we were on our way in a white Land Rover Discovery Sport.

Land Rover Experience Delhi land-rover-experience-new-delhi (8)

All Land Rovers come with something called ‘Terrain Response System’. It consists of multiple modes including ‘Rock Crawl’, ‘Grass, Gravel and Snow’, ‘Mud and Ruts’, ‘Sand’ and, of course, the general driving mode. What this system does is alter steering, braking, and throttle response to suit the kind of terrain the car is on. It also fiddles with gear changes and the all wheel drive system to ensure the right amount of power is transmitted to each wheel. We stuck to the Mud and Ruts and Grass, Gravel and Snow modes for the most part of the course. It started off with a steep descent, which gave us a chance to sample the Hill Descent Control as well. This system ensures the car rolls down at a preset speed without any braking inputs from the driver.

Land Rover Experience Delhi land-rover-experience-new-delhi (4)

This was followed by a couple of steep inclines, which the Discovery Sport and its electronic aids made light work of. All the driver has to do is merely select the right mode and the vehicle will take you across without breaking a sweat. While negotiating sharp crests, the trick is to keep your foot on the accelerator. This helps the on board system detect exactly how much power should be sent to each wheel in order to get you through. To be quite honest, we were genuinely surprised and mighty impressed with the way these SUVs, piloted by drivers with little to no off road experience, were able to easily negotiate this off-road course.

Land Rover Experience Delhi land-rover-experience-new-delhi (1)

A patch of green grass on a side incline gave us a chance to try out the ‘Grass, Gravel and Snow’ mode. The defining characteristic if such surfaces is the slippery top with hard soil underneath. While traversing such patches, the amount of torque being transmitted needs to be controlled to prevent loss of traction. Needless to say, these Land Rover SUVs were able to negotiate this patch without too much fuss.

Land Rover Experience Delhi land-rover-experience-new-delhi (5)

Along the course, there was a patch of axle twisters. This particular obstacle requires controlled throttle and brake inputs from the driver. The electronics take care of the rest. Axle twisters make for some heavy articulation and are one of the most challenging patches to negotiate. A couple more steep inclines, side inclines and a lot of under body scrapping later we drove back to the starting point. This whole experience proves that the Discovery Sport and Range Roer Evoque SUVs are not just pretty faces to make your neighbours jealous. These are some seriously capable off-roaders.

It is a bit sad knowing that most of these won’t even get to experience a fraction of what we did at the Land Rover Experience. But then, if you spend 50 odd lakhs on a car you would be reluctant to take them out into the wild too. That’s where the Land Rover Experience comes in. It gives customers a chance to get a first-hand experience of exactly how capable their beloved SUVs are.

Toyota Innova Crysta vs Mahindra XUV500

Toyota brought the Innova Crysta to our shores in May 2016. The MPV has become an instant hit clocking huge numbers and commanding an ever-increasing waiting period. An MPV by nature, the Innova Crysta, in terms of pricing, doesn’t have any direct rivals as all other MPVs are significantly cheaper, have smaller engines and lesser features. Although Mahindra’s XUV500 belongs to a different category, both these vehicles fall in the same price bracket. Both have seven seats. In many ways, then, for someone looking for a car for 5-7 in the Rs. 15-20 lakhs range, these two could be ideal candidates. Read our Toyota Innova Crysta vs Mahindra XUV500 comparison to find out which of these suits your needs better.

Toyota Innova Crysta vs Mahindra XUV500 Design Comparison

The 2016 MY Toyota Innova features a much-improved exterior. Its nose now gets sleeker headlamps with LED daytime running lights and projector units. That combined with the wide gaping grille lend the Innova Crysta a very aggressive look. Overall profile of the car is unmistakably MPV. The van like silhouette of MPVs is not everyone’s cup of tea and if you’re one of those who do not like that particular body style then the new Innova won’t make your heart skip a beat. That said, the new model here is certainly an improvement over the old one. However, the rear is a bit too bland. Those who prefer SUVs in terms of appearance will like the way the XUV500 looks. The meaty wheel arches, body cladding and other design elements come together to form an SUV that the car buying generally seems to like.

The new Innova comes across as more premium and roomier than car it replaces. Its cabin is now worthy of a car that costs upwards of 15 lakhs. The dashboard design is very modern and makes good use of dark coloured materials. It scores really well on occupant comfort and space, featuring seating for 7-8 passengers. In contrast, the Mahindra XUV500’s cabin is much simpler as far as the design is concerned. The overall layout is neat and tidy. One of the highlights here is the instrument console which looks brilliant when lit. However, Mahindra XUV500 loses out to the Innova Crysta in terms of overall quality and fit and finish.

Toyota Innova Crysta vs Mahindra XUV500 Comparison – Verdict

  • Design – As always, design is a matter of personal taste. It all comes down to whether you prefer the styling of an MPV or an SUV.
  • Specifications – Toyota offers a more powerful set of diesel engines. Also, only the Innova is available with a petrol engine option. If you want AWD, then the XUV500 is your only option.
  • Features – Both vehicles are fairly feature rich offerings. Top-end trims of the Innova Crysta get some additional features, but they also cost more.
  • Price – The Toyota Innova Crysta costs more than the Mahindra XUV500. But it also boasts more powerful engines and a slightly longer list of features. Plus, it is better in terms of overall quality.
