Greetings From Ojai, California

Walking through Ojai, a mission-style town 90 miles northwest of Los Angeles, you quickly understand why “the Village,” as locals call it, has long been a magnet for those seeking escape, restoration and natural beauty. You’re snuggled by magic and surrounded by mountains, hills and protected forests. “There’s something about Ojai that makes me feel centered and restored,” says yoga teacher and new resident Andrea Brook.

Famously a Mecca for new-agers, these days hippy life has given way to craft cocktails and DJs spinning tunes on gallery night. The vibe is still laid-back and peaceful, but tinged with a hipster sensibility. Most you meet here—you will make friends just by walking down the street—are artists, yoga instructors, film executives or chefs. And everyone shares their talents in the array of well-curated boutiques, galleries and organic restaurants clustered around the tiny downtown.

During a two-day stint in Ojai, which has a population of less than 8,000, you can fill your cup with outdoor pursuits, creative exploration and peaceful reflection. This combination embodies the spirit of the valley.
To set the tone for the weekend, stroll down East Ojai Avenue past boutiques and galleries and make your way to Libbey Park. As you begin to breathe the valley air, you’ll realize things here move at a slower pace. The small green space in the town center serves as a community gathering spot with seating areas surrounded by native plantings leading to the newly restored Libbey Bowl. If you’re lucky, you may catch a free performance in the historic amphitheater or one of the park’s many free art festivals.

Weekend Layover: New York City

With neighborhoods like Williamsburg going all J.Crew, Brooklyn gentrification priced out young artists untethered from daddy’s cash teet, but a fresh new scene is emerging in Spanish Harlem, a.k.a. El Barrio. From Bushwick, take the L train back to Union Station and head north on the 6. The Museum of Modern Art (51st station) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (86th station) are optional detours, but exit at 110th for a scene in the midst of a comeback.

First, admire the past at the Graffiti Hall of Fame at East 106th Street and Park Avenue (yes, like the BET show), and then take in the future at Jonathan Chanduvi’s Studio 323 on East 108th Street (between 1st and 2nd Avenues.). The Peruvian-born artist is a third-generation restorer who worked on Terracotta Warriors and Han Dynasty horses before turning 30, and his multi-discipline skillset now creates original art in a 21st-century Jackson Pollock style.
After the gallery, walk north through SoHa (South Harlem) to East 125th Street to see Harlem’s main retail street. More optional detours include the Apollo Theater on West 125th Street and the legendary Rucker Park basketball courts at West 155th Street and 8th Avenue.

Layover adventure: Transit destination - Los Angeles

When transiting through any airport in the United States, travellers will need to set aside ample time to go through immigration and security. This could take up to two hours at Los Angeles International Airport, a large and notoriously difficult one to navigate. Tour agents recommend that transit tourists have at least an eight-hour layover if they want to leave the airport.

It is admittedly a bit of a hassle, but travellers will have the warm rays of the Californian sunshine and dozens of unique activities in Los Angeles as a reward.

The airport itself does not offer transit tours, but a company called LA City Tours does.

It has two itineraries to choose from. One leaves the airport by coach at 9.30am and takes the tour to Venice Beach, downtown Los Angeles, the Hollywood Walk of Fame for lunch, the Hollywood Sign and Rodeo Drive to ogle at Hollywood homes before heading back to the airport about five hours later. The tour costs US$89 (S$114) an adult and US$69 a child.

The second tour is shorter. It starts at 10.30am and takes about three hours, during which tourists will stop at the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Hollywood Sign and Rodeo Drive for the same price as the longer tour.
Travellers can also choose to tour Los Angeles on their own.

The LAX FlyAway buses run every hour between each airport terminal and five locations, including Santa Monica and Hollywood for under US$10 each way.

Santa Monica is the closest attraction to the airport. There, visitors can lie on Los Angeles' most popular beach, play carnival games or ride the ferris wheel at the famous 100-year old Santa Monica Pier, or take a walk down Third Street Promenade to people-watch and do some shopping. It takes about 45 minutes to get there, depending on traffic.

Hollywood is about an hour to 90 minutes away, depending on traffic, but once there, travellers can visit a number of iconic attractions, such as Grauman's Chinese Theatre (now known as the TCL Chinese Theatre), Ripley's Believe it Or Not museum and Universal Studios, a movie studio and theme park where travellers can enjoy thrill rides and take a behindthe-scenes look at special-effects techniques.

LA City Tours also has tours departing hourly from its office on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Travellers who join one get a free ride back to the airport.

REGIONAL ROAD TRIPS FROM ATLANTA

More people are once again discovering the art of the American road trip. Whether the reasons are economical or born from curiosity, road trips offer the chance to make the journey as adventure-filled and memorable as the destination. Discover culinary treats, history, quirky art and natural wonders along the road to these popular destinations from Atlanta.

HILTON HEAD, SC
Hilton Head Island welcomes golf enthusiasts and beachcombers alike. Its close proximity to other popular destinations makes it easy to enjoy a day trip to Charleston; Bluffton, SC; Savannah; and Tybee Island, GA.

About a third of the way to Hilton Head from Atlanta, Macon, GA, is an ideal place to explore and stretch your legs. If you are traveling with Fido, be sure to head to Macon Dog Park, a 6-acre off-leash enclosure complete with a stream and agility area. Once home to legends such as James Brown, Macon is also steeped in music history. You can visit the Big House, where the Allman Brothers Band lived in the early 1970s; it’s now a museum displaying memorabilia from the group’s past. Macon also has one of the most unusual museums in Georgia, the Museum of Arts and Science, which houses science exhibits as well as fine art and more than 70 native and exotic animals.

Make your trip home an adventure all to itself. Detour off the highway about 30 minutes before Macon to Fort Valley, GA. From mid-May through August, you can’t miss a trip to Lane Southern Orchards for fresh, right-from-the-tree peaches. If you are lucky enough to be there on a harvest day, you can watch the harvest-to-packing process while perched atop the viewing catwalk. Be careful, though: Store-bought peaches may never again be acceptable.

DESTIN, FL
Which route to take to reach the azure waters of the aptly named Emerald Coast is a widely contested topic in Atlanta. Choosing to drive toward Columbus, GA, allows for a stop in Pine Mountain, where you can steer right on into Wild Animal Safari, a drive-through animal park. Unexpected rolling mountains present a scenic overlook at F.D. Roosevelt State Park, Georgia’s largest state park, where you can get a photo sitting next to a life-size sculpture of its presidential namesake. On the other end of the park is the town of Warm Springs, GA. Visit FDR’s home, the Little White House, or take a tour of the mineral springs complex where he sought relief in the constantly 88-degree waters.

MYRTLE BEACH, SC
As you make your way to the boardwalk and beaches of Myrtle, Augusta, GA, is a must-do. Stroll along the Savannah River as the Augusta Riverwalk meanders through gardens and even a children’s playground. Find unique artwork while exploring the galleries and art studios of the creative community known as Artists Row. If you are lucky enough to find yourself there during dinner hours or Sunday brunch time, then head to the Bee’s Knees. The pup-friendly outdoor seating of this tapas restaurant makes it a perfect choice for those traveling with dogs. Don’t miss the pan-seared scallops, garlicky shrimp and smoked Gouda nachos.
GATLINBURG, TN
Known as the “Gateway to the Smokies,” Gatlinburg, TN, is a popular destination for fall leaf-viewing pilgrimages, as well as for those seeking a cooler respite from the heat of the Southern summer. The scenic route along Highway 441 demands a stop in Tiger, GA, at the eclectic Southern souvenir complex of Goats on the Roof. Yes, there are actually goats on the roof. You can feed them via one of the cable-delivery systems using a stationary bike or hand pulley.

The alternate route is less scenic but has a time advantage, as it runs mainly along Interstate 75N. A 30-minute detour at Adairsville will lead you to the town of Summerville, GA. Howard Finster’s Paradise Garden is a homage to the roadside rock gardens and tourist attractions popular in early-20th-century rural America. The maze of magically created folk-art sculpture and architecture is a one-of-a-kind place that he created from a vision he claims to have received from God.

Chattanooga, TN, is a convenient place to stop for lunch before hanging an eastward turn toward Knoxville. Don’t let the paper plates at Champy’s Famous Fried Chicken fool you. Its fried chicken and tamales are memorable. Then, a trip to Lookout Mountain will take you right by Ruby Falls, a waterfall once unknown to almost everyone, as it is located 1,120 feet underground. Ride the glass elevator down to the constantly 60-degree caverns as your guide shares history and geological facts on the nation’s deepest and largest underground waterfall that is open to the public.

AMERICA’S COOLEST CITY PARKS

FLYING TRAPEZE LESSONS, HOT-AIR BALLOON RACES, SWING-DANCE PARTIES: GET YOUR KICKS AT AMERICA’S COOLEST CITY PARKS.

BALBOA PARK, SAN DIEGO
The sprawling 1,200-acre Balboa Park packs in more than two dozen cultural institutions, including the Tony Award–winning Old Globe theater, the San Diego Museum of Art, and the famed San Diego Zoo, one of the world’s few zoos with resident giant pandas. The park overlooks a seriously beautiful backdrop (the Pacific Ocean) and has buildings so stunning that some exteriors were filmed by Orson Welles to represent the grand fictional estate Xanadu in Citizen Kane.

Coolest Time to Visit: Spring, when the zoo animals are more active and the park’s magnificent gardens bloom.

CITY PARK, DENVER
More than 125 years ago, locals first gathered around the park’s bandstand on Ferril Lake to listen to live concerts. The City Park Jazz Summer Concert Series continues that tradition, attracting tens of thousands of concertgoers annually with 10 free jazz, blues, and salsa shows including the 18-piece Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra and local salsa band La Candela. Another updated relic: Ferril Lake’s Electric Prismatic Fountain, whose water patterns change every five minutes, was completed in 2008 to replace the 1909 original.

Coolest Time to Visit: Summer evenings. The jazz concert series takes place on Sundays at 6 p.m., while the Electric Prismatic Fountains’s spectacular lighted shows—employing 116 colored LED fixtures—start each day at dusk.
CITY PARK, NEW ORLEANS
One of the first things park visitors notice is that these are no ordinary trees. This is the world’s largest collection of mature live oaks—majestic, sculptural-looking marvels, the oldest of which have branches that spread out twice as wide as their height (up to 75 feet). Live bands that gather at the finish line of the annual Rock ’n’ Roll Mardi Gras Marathon course lend an only-in-New-Orleans vibe.

Coolest Time to Visit: Thursday evenings (March–October), when the Botanical Garden throws genteel parties with mint juleps and performances by ensembles like the New Orleans Ragtime Orchestra.

DISCOVERY GREEN PARK, HOUSTON
Concrete parking lots were torn up to make way for this 12-acre downtown paradise of lawns, a man-made lake, and cool features like 14-foot-high arcing water jets. Dog jumping and other wacky competitions, free classes, and fine dining at James Beard award–winning chef Robert Del Grande’s restaurants have helped lure some three million visitors since the opening in 2008. It’s a transformation that would make singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell proud.

Coolest Time to Visit: During Houston’s annual Restaurant Week (actually a month, August 1–31, 2011), whose participants include Del Grande’s park restaurant, The Grove. Its elegant, glass-walled dining room overlooks century-old live oak trees.

FOREST PARK, ST. LOUIS
A one-stop destination for many of St. Louis’s finest cultural institutions: the McDonnell Planetarium; the Cass Gilbert–designed Saint Louis Art Museum, with paintings by mid-20th-century masters like Andy Warhol and a 56-foot-tall steel tree by contemporary artist Roxy Paine; and the Muny, the country’s oldest outdoor musical theater. With 500 more acres than Central Park, it has plenty of room left for picnic areas, including covered pavilions with barbecue pits. Coolest Time to Visit: September, when dozens of colorful hot-air balloons take to the sky, originating from Central Field, for the annual Great Forest Park Balloon Race. GOLDEN GATE PARK, SAN FRANCISCO
This iconic park—where the Summer of Love kicked off in 1967 and dreadlocked drummers still gather in circles—has gotten at least some updates. The de Young Museum reopened with a Herzog & de Meuron–designed building in 2005 that mounts blockbuster exhibits like a collection of 100-plus Picasso works on loan from Paris. The California Academy of Sciences, whose eco-friendly Renzo Piano structure debuted in 2008, has a 1.7 million plant “living” roof and restaurants by star chefs Charles Phan and Loretta Keller.

Coolest Time to Visit: Sundays, when John F. Kennedy Drive is closed to cars and the outdoor swing-dance party, Lindy in the Park, takes place (11 a.m.–2 p.m., with free beginner lessons at noon).

GOVERNORS ISLAND, NEW YORK CITY
Instead of lazing in Central Park’s Sheep Meadow or Great Lawn, you now have the option to head south for eclectic art, food events, and even a sandy beach at this former military base off the tip of lower Manhattan. For circus geeks, there are flying trapeze lessons on the weekends; others rock out to awesome waterfront concerts from the likes of M.I.A. and Passion Pit. Getting to Governors Island has its own appeal: the free ferry ride from Manhattan’s Battery Maritime Building or Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 6 offers panoramic views of the skyline and the Statue of Liberty.

Coolest Time to Visit: Fridays from late May through early October, when hour-long bike rentals are free (normally $15 for adults). The island has a car-free policy, so cyclists rule the roads.

GRANT PARK, CHICAGO
The northwest corner, dubbed Millennium Park, made headlines when it opened in 2004 with the Frank Gehry–designed Jay Pritzker Pavilion and Anish Kapoor’s stainless-steel Cloud Gate—the shiny, reflective bean-shaped sculpture that’s become an instant city icon and popular photo-op. Compare the outdoor installations to the collections within the park’s Art Institute of Chicago, famous for Grant Wood’s American Gothic.

Coolest Time to Visit: Summer, when the lakefront park hosts two major events: Taste of Chicago, the world’s largest outdoor food festival, with treats from 70-plus local restaurants, and Lollapalooza, which celebrates its 20th anniversary in August 2011.

PAPAGO PARK, PHOENIX/TEMPE
Orange-red sandstone geological rock formations like Hole-in-the-Rock have been a fixture of this 1,200-acre park for millennia. The Desert Botanical Garden, a more recent addition, nurtures cacti, succulents, and other desert plants—amid a rotating collection of modern art that has ranged from steel sculptures by Ludvic to a 17-piece glass installation by Dale Chihuly. The park is also home to the Phoenix Zoo, which opened a new exhibit for its orangutan family in April 2011.

Coolest Time to Visit: Sunset, when the sandstone buttes take on a deeper, more fantastic color. Arrive before 7 p.m., when entrances close (trails remain open until 11 p.m.). While the city skyline is visible from Hole-in-the-Rock, the most sweeping views are from South Mountain. Don’t forget your camera!

PATTERSON PARK, BALTIMORE
A 27-foot-long platypus and 25-foot-long caterpillar are just some of the outrageous people-powered creatures that have participated in Baltimore’s annual Kinetic Sculpture Race. The park also encourages dress-up for its Great Halloween Lantern Parade and for BARCStoberfest, with contests for best pet costume and pet trick. Dogs (and their owners) like to loll about on a gently sloping hill near the restored 1890 Pagoda.

Coolest Time to Visit: May, when you can catch both the wacky Kinetic Sculpture Race and the annual Bike Jam, a daylong cycling festival for watching races and participating in public rides, including a 12-mile waterfront route.

PIEDMONT PARK, ATLANTA
The concert lineup here has included Sir Paul McCartney, the Eagles, and the Dave Matthews Band—and those are just the rock legends. Jazz takes over for the annual May festival, and music also plays a part in the Atlanta Dogwood Festival, which celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2011 with more than 70 sets (from a Native American flute performer to a Turkish folk dance group). Groundbreaking on a 53-acre extension started in 2008 and has already produced a bocce court, an aquatic center with lap lanes, and a children’s splashing area.

Coolest Time to Visit: Memorial Day Weekend is the high point of the annual Atlanta Jazz Festival, which has seen legends like Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie perform.

SCHENLEY PARK, PITTSBURGH
There’s a sport for everyone. Choose among 13 tennis courts, a soccer field, a running track, a high-jump area, and golf courses: an 18-hole Frisbee golf course and a traditional 4,600-yard course on rolling terrain with an indoor practice facility. Of course, you can also take it slow. Stroll by rare miniature orchids and primitive tree ferns at Phipps Conservatory or plop with a blanket on Flagstaff Hill, where movies are screened on summer evenings.

Coolest Time to Visit: During the free Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix (July 15–24, 2011). Some 200,000 visitors cheer on 150 sports cars—including prewar and MG T Series vehicles—as they navigate 23 turns (not to mention hay bales) around the park’s Paddock Drive.
